Z-Man MudStudZ
The Z-Man MudStudZ is a pre-rigged bottom-contact inshore swimbait designed to imitate one of the most important forage species along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts: the mud minnow, killifish or cocahoe.
Unlike a conventional paddletail on a jighead, the MudStudZ uses a low-center-of-gravity internal weighted harness that helps the lure track upright as it crawls, hops and swims across the bottom.
That upright posture keeps the hook facing upward and helps the MudStudZ navigate oyster reefs, shell beds, rocks, sand and mud where conventional jighead-rigged plastics can roll over or constantly hang up.
Built from Z-Man's 10X Tough ElaZtech, equipped with a heavy-duty sickle-shaped black-nickel hook and powered by Z-Man's SWAG tail, the MudStudZ is purpose-built for redfish, speckled trout, flounder, snook and other inshore predators.
Built for Bottom Contact
The MudStudZ isn't simply another swimbait.
Z-Man designed it specifically to fish on and immediately above the bottom.
Its broad belly and internal weighting create a low center of gravity that helps the bait remain upright while being dragged or retrieved across structure.
That makes it especially useful around:
-
Oyster Bars
-
Shell Beds
-
Rocky Bottom
-
Potholes
-
Sand
-
Mud
-
Marsh Edges
-
Mangrove Shorelines
-
Docks
-
Inshore Structure
These are exactly the places where redfish, trout, flounder and snook frequently feed—and where an exposed jighead can spend too much time getting hung up.
Mud Minnow & Cocahoe Profile
Mud minnows and killifish are staple inshore forage throughout much of the Southeast and Gulf Coast.
Depending on where you fish, you may hear them called:
-
Mud Minnows
-
Killifish
-
Cocahoes
-
Mummichogs
-
Storm Minnows
The MudStudZ recreates that compact, broad-bodied forage profile in a durable artificial presentation.
For Florida anglers, it's an especially natural presentation around marshes, oyster bars, mangroves and shallow inshore structure.
Stays Upright Around Shell & Structure
One of the most important characteristics of the MudStudZ is its ability to maintain an upright posture.
The internal weighted harness keeps the center of gravity low, helping prevent the lure from constantly rolling onto its side.
Keeping the hook facing upward improves the bait's ability to move across shell, rock and other snag-prone bottom structure.
It doesn't make the lure completely snag-proof, but it gives anglers considerably more confidence fishing directly through the areas where inshore predators are feeding.
SWAG Tail Action
The MudStudZ incorporates Z-Man's proprietary SWAG tail, a hybrid wedge-and-paddle design engineered to produce a wide, natural wag.
Importantly, the tail continues working across a broad range of retrieve speeds.
You can:
-
Slowly Crawl It
-
Drag It
-
Hop It
-
Swim It
-
Burn It
-
Let It Fall
The tail continues producing movement even when the bait is being worked slowly along the bottom.
That versatility lets anglers change presentations without changing lures.
10X Tough ElaZtech Construction
The MudStudZ is molded from Z-Man's proprietary 10X Tough ElaZtech material.
That durability is especially valuable for this style of fishing.
Oyster shells, barnacles, rocks and dock structure can quickly destroy conventional soft plastics.
ElaZtech is designed to withstand repeated contact with abrasive structure as well as repeated strikes from aggressive inshore fish.
Heavy-Duty Inshore Hook
Z-Man equips the MudStudZ with a heavy-duty sickle-shaped black-nickel hook.
The hook is designed to provide reliable penetration while handling powerful inshore species such as:
-
Redfish
-
Snook
-
Speckled Trout
-
Flounder
Because the hook rides upward as the bait maintains its upright posture, anglers can confidently work the lure across bottom structure.
Creates a Natural Bottom Disturbance
On softer bottoms such as sand and mud, the MudStudZ can be crawled directly across the bottom.
As it moves, the lure can kick up a small trail of disturbed sediment behind it.
That disturbance resembles a small baitfish fleeing or feeding along the bottom and can help draw the attention of nearby predators.
It's particularly natural around shallow flats and marsh environments where mud minnows and killifish spend much of their time close to the bottom.
Choosing the Right MudStudZ Size
Z-Man offers the MudStudZ in two sizes.
2.75" — 1/4 oz.
The smaller MudStudZ is an excellent option for:
-
Shallow Flats
-
Smaller Forage
-
Finesse Inshore Fishing
-
Shallow Oyster Bars
-
Redfish
-
Speckled Trout
-
Flounder
The 2.75" size provides a compact presentation when fish are feeding on smaller bait.
3.25" — 3/8 oz.
The larger MudStudZ provides additional weight and profile.
We'd choose it for:
-
Deeper Potholes
-
Stronger Current
-
Deeper Oyster Bars
-
Larger Forage
-
Redfish
-
Snook
-
Speckled Trout
-
Flounder
The additional weight helps maintain bottom contact when conditions make the lighter 1/4 oz. version more difficult to control.
How to Fish the MudStudZ
Slow Crawl
Cast beyond productive structure and slowly retrieve the MudStudZ along the bottom.
This is one of the most natural ways to imitate a mud minnow or killifish.
Hop & Pause
Use short rod lifts to make the lure hop off the bottom.
Allow it to settle before moving it again.
This can be particularly effective around potholes, shell and oyster bars.
Drag It
Slowly drag the bait across sand, mud or shell.
The goal isn't always to make the lure swim several feet off the bottom.
Sometimes the best presentation is simply keeping it in the strike zone and allowing the SWAG tail to work.
Swim It
The MudStudZ can also be retrieved like a conventional swimbait.
Use a steady retrieve when fish are actively feeding or when you need to cover more water.
Color Selection
Z-Man offers the MudStudZ in 10 hand-painted and photo-printed color patterns designed around regional inshore forage.
Natural patterns include representations of mud minnows, cocahoes, striped killifish and storm minnows, while other colors provide greater contrast for stained water and low-light conditions.
For clear water, we'd generally start with a more natural forage pattern.
For stained water, cloudy conditions or lower light, move toward a pattern with more contrast or visibility.
Built for Florida Inshore Fishing
The MudStudZ is particularly well suited to the type of inshore fishing we do around Florida.
Use it around:

Oyster Bars
-
Mangroves
-

Why Choose the Z-Man MudStudZ?
The MudStudZ fills a different role than a traditional paddletail on a jighead.
A standard jighead-and-plastic combination is incredibly versatile, but fishing it directly through oysters, shell and rocky bottom can lead to constant snagging and damaged plastics.
The MudStudZ is engineered specifically for those situations.
Its low center of gravity keeps the lure upright, its upward-facing hook helps it navigate structure, the SWAG tail maintains action at slow speeds and the 10X Tough ElaZtech body stands up to abrasive cover.
That makes it a purpose-built option for anglers who want to keep a bait right where many inshore predators spend their time feeding—on the bottom.

Premier Tackle Take
The Z-Man MudStudZ is one of the more interesting new inshore baits for 2026 because it solves a real problem rather than simply giving us another paddletail shape.
Oyster bars and shell bottom hold fish, but they're also exactly where conventional jigheads get hung up.
The MudStudZ is designed to stay upright and keep its hook facing upward while maintaining bottom contact.
For shallow flats and lighter presentations, we'd start with the 2.75" 1/4 oz.
For deeper potholes, stronger current or when you want a little more profile, we'd move to the 3.25" 3/8 oz.
For Florida anglers targeting redfish, trout, flounder and snook around oyster, shell, sand and mud, this is a bait we'd absolutely want in the inshore box.
