Yamamoto 7" Speed Senko
The Yamamoto 7" Speed Senko takes the proven Senko body and turns it into a more aggressive swimming worm built for covering water, fishing grass and working through cover.
Designed at the request of Yamamoto's pro staff, the Speed Senko features a large curved tail that produces a heavy thumping action similar to a Colorado blade moving through the water.
That extra vibration helps bass locate the bait around grass, laydowns, brush piles and other cover while retaining the substantial body profile anglers expect from a Senko.
Rig it with a light Texas-rig weight and swim it over vegetation, or slow it down with a lift-and-drop presentation around cover.
A Senko Built to Cover Water
The original Senko excels when anglers want a subtle presentation and natural fall.
The Speed Senko is different.
This bait is designed to move.
Its large tail produces significantly more vibration, allowing anglers to cover water and actively search for bass rather than waiting for the bait to slowly fall through the strike zone.
It's an excellent choice when fish are:
-
Holding in Grass
-
Positioned Around Brush
-
Feeding Around Laydowns
-
Scattered Across Shallow Flats
-
Responding to Moving Baits
-
Feeding in Stained Water
-
Hiding in Heavy Cover
If you're looking for a Senko-style bait you can actively swim, this is the one.
Heavy Thumping Tail
The defining feature of the Speed Senko is its large curved tail.
As the bait moves through the water, the tail produces a pronounced thumping vibration Yamamoto compares to the feel of a Colorado blade.
That gives bass another way to locate the lure beyond simply seeing it.
The additional vibration can be particularly useful around vegetation or in stained water where visibility is reduced.
Texas Rig It & Start Swimming
One of the best ways to fish the Speed Senko is with a lightly weighted Texas rig.
The weedless presentation allows the bait to move through vegetation and cover where exposed-hook moving baits can become difficult to fish.
Cast it across a grassy flat and retrieve it just above the vegetation.
When the bait contacts grass, pop it free and continue the retrieve.
That sudden burst of speed and direction change can trigger a reaction strike.
Excellent Florida Grass Bait
The 7" Speed Senko makes particular sense for Florida bass fishing.
Use it around:
-
Hydrilla
-
Kissimmee Grass
-
Lily Pads
-
Reeds
-
Submerged Vegetation
-
Canal Edges
-
Brush
-
Laydowns
-
Shallow Flats
Its weedless Texas-rigged presentation lets anglers cover vegetation efficiently while the large tail provides enough vibration to help fish locate the bait.
For Florida anglers who already fish traditional speed worms, the Speed Senko fits naturally into the same style of fishing.
Swim It Over Grass
When bass are holding beneath submerged vegetation, rig the Speed Senko with a light bullet weight and retrieve it over the top.
Adjust the weight and retrieve speed until the bait runs just above the grass.
If it begins contacting vegetation, rip it free and continue swimming.
This gives you a presentation capable of covering a large amount of water without constantly hanging in the grass.
Lift & Drop Around Cover
The Speed Senko doesn't have to be continuously retrieved.
Yamamoto also recommends fishing it Texas rigged with a lift-and-drop retrieve around cover.
Cast near:
-
Brush Piles
-
Laydowns
-
Grass Edges
-
Holes in Vegetation
-
Docks
-
Submerged Cover
Allow the bait to fall, lift it enough to activate the tail and then allow it to fall again.
This lets you slow the presentation down while still taking advantage of the Speed Senko's tail action.
Weighted or Weightless
The Speed Senko can be fished either weighted or weightless, giving anglers control over depth and retrieve speed.
Lightly Weighted
Our first choice for most applications.
A light bullet weight helps the bait maintain depth while still allowing it to swim naturally through grass and cover.
Heavier Weight
Increase the weight when you need to reach deeper vegetation or penetrate heavier cover.
Weightless
Fish it weightless when you want a slower, shallower presentation around sparse vegetation or other shallow cover.
The key is adjusting the rig to keep the bait in the productive part of the water column.
Speed Senko vs. Original Senko
These two baits share the Senko name, but we'd use them very differently.
Original Yamamoto Senko
Choose the original Senko when you want:
-
Subtle Natural Fall
-
Weightless Presentations
-
Wacky Rigging
-
Finesse Fishing
-
Slower Presentations
-
Pressured Fish
7" Speed Senko
Choose the Speed Senko when you want:
-
More Tail Action
-
Stronger Vibration
-
Swimming Presentations
-
Grass Fishing
-
Texas Rigging
-
Faster Water Coverage
-
Reaction Strikes
The original Senko is primarily about the fall.
The Speed Senko is primarily about movement and vibration.
There's enough difference between the two that we'd carry both rather than viewing the Speed Senko as simply another Senko size.
Choosing a Color
Color selection doesn't need to be complicated.
Green Pumpkin
A dependable starting point in clear to moderately stained water and around natural vegetation.
Watermelon-Based Colors
Excellent around grass and in clearer water where a natural presentation is important.
Black / Blue
Provides stronger contrast in stained water, heavy cover and lower-light conditions.
Plum & Darker Colors
Strong options in Florida waters, particularly when water clarity is reduced.
The Speed Senko already creates substantial vibration, so color can be used to adjust how visible or natural you want the overall presentation to appear.

Why Choose the Yamamoto 7" Speed Senko?
The Speed Senko fills a completely different role than the original Senko.
Instead of relying primarily on a subtle fall, the Speed Senko adds a large thumping tail that allows anglers to cover water and actively search for fish.
Texas rig it and you get a weedless moving bait capable of swimming through grass and cover where spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs and other moving presentations can become difficult to fish.
And when fish don't want a steady retrieve, slow down and work it with a lift-and-drop presentation.
That's what makes the Speed Senko useful: you can search with it or slow down and work individual pieces of cover without changing baits.
Premier Tackle Take
The 7" Speed Senko is a very good fit for Florida bass fishing.
We'd primarily fish it Texas rigged with a light bullet weight and swim it across or just above submerged grass. If the bait catches vegetation, snap it free and keep moving.
The large tail gives you considerably more vibration than a traditional Senko, while the weedless Texas rig lets you put it into areas where exposed-hook moving baits can become frustrating.
If the fish stop chasing, don't immediately change lures. Slow the Speed Senko down and use a lift-and-drop retrieve around holes in the grass, brush or isolated cover.
If you want the classic subtle Senko fall, buy the original Senko.
If you want to cover water and make fish find the bait, reach for the Speed Senko.
