Purpose-Built for Offshore Trolling
The Shimano Talavera Bluewater Ring Guide Slick Butt Conventional Rod is particularly well suited for anglers who troll along Florida's Gulf Coast and other offshore fishing destinations.
Kingfish Trolling
An excellent choice for slow-trolling live bait, including blue runners, threadfin herring, and other suitable baitfish. The rod's moderate action helps cushion aggressive kingfish strikes and maintain pressure during fast runs.
Mahi-Mahi Trolling
Well suited for trolling rigged natural baits, skirted baits, and appropriately sized artificial lures around offshore weed lines, floating debris, and current breaks.
Tuna Trolling
Medium Heavy and Heavy configurations provide options for appropriately matched tuna trolling setups. Choose the rod based on expected fish size, lure resistance, and fishing line requirements.
Sailfish Trolling
The moderate-action models are suitable for appropriately matched light-tackle sailfish trolling presentations, including rigged natural baits and live bait.
General Offshore Trolling
From nearshore kingfish grounds to offshore trolling spreads, the Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt provides a versatile platform for anglers fishing multiple rods from conventional rod holders.

Which Shimano Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt Rod Should You Choose?
6'6" Medium — Light Offshore Trolling
The 6'6" Medium offers a forgiving moderate action for lighter trolling presentations and live bait fishing. Its 15–30 lb monofilament rating makes it an option for lighter tackle and smaller trolling baits.
6'6" Medium Heavy — Best All-Around Trolling Option
The 6'6" Medium Heavy offers a balance of trolling flexibility and fish-fighting power. Its moderate action and 20–40 lb monofilament rating make it a versatile choice for kingfish, mahi-mahi, and general offshore trolling.
6'6" Heavy — Heavier Trolling Applications
The 6'6" Heavy provides additional backbone while maintaining a moderate action. Its 25–50 lb monofilament rating makes it suitable for heavier trolling presentations and appropriately matched offshore tackle.
6' Medium Heavy — Compact Trolling Setup
The 6' Medium Heavy combines a shorter rod length with a moderate-fast action. This configuration is well suited for anglers who prefer compact rod handling and a responsive conventional trolling setup.
6' Heavy — Maximum Power in a Shorter Configuration
The 6' Heavy offers additional power for heavier trolling tackle while maintaining the convenient handling characteristics of a shorter rod. It is a strong option for anglers who prioritize rod control and heavier trolling applications.
Shimano DIAFLASH Technology
The new Talavera Bluewater B Series incorporates Shimano DIAFLASH reinforcement, which uses opposing diagonal carbon-tape wraps to reinforce the rod blank.
This construction helps reduce unwanted twisting under load, improving blank stability and allowing the rod to transfer power more efficiently when fighting powerful offshore fish.
For trolling anglers, this added stability complements the rod's moderate to moderate-fast action, helping provide a controlled response during strikes and extended fish fights.
Why Choose a Slick Butt Trolling Rod?
The slick-butt handle is a practical feature for offshore anglers who regularly fish conventional rods from boat-mounted rod holders.
Compared with a textured rear grip, a smooth slick butt is designed to slide more easily in and out of compatible rod holders. This is particularly useful when running multiple trolling lines and quickly removing a rod after a strike.
Combined with the rod's conventional configuration and trolling-oriented actions, the slick-butt design makes the Talavera Bluewater B Series a practical choice for dedicated offshore trolling setups.
Pair Your Talavera Bluewater Slick Butt With a Shimano Conventional Reel
Selecting the right conventional reel helps complete a balanced offshore trolling combination.
Recommended Shimano reel families include:
-
Shimano SpeedMaster II: Two-speed lever-drag reels offering versatility for offshore trolling and live-bait presentations.
-
Shimano Talica: Premium lever-drag conventional reels designed for demanding offshore saltwater fishing.
-
Shimano Torium: Star-drag conventional reels suitable for selected lighter trolling and live-bait applications.
Match reel size, fishing line, drag settings, and terminal tackle to the specific rod's published line rating and your intended trolling technique.
