Shimano Curado DC 200/201 Baitcasting Reel
The Shimano Curado DC 200/201 Baitcasting Reel combines Shimano's proven I-DC4 Digital Control braking system with a larger 200-size spool designed for increased line capacity, heavier fishing line, and bigger artificial lures. Offering up to 40% more line capacity than the original Curado DC 150 platform, the 200/201 is an excellent choice for anglers who need additional capacity without sacrificing the comfort and casting control of a low-profile baitcaster.
Built for serious freshwater bass fishing, the Curado DC 200/201 also offers versatility for occasional light inshore applications targeting redfish, speckled trout, and snook. Its combination of smooth gearing, rigid construction, and intelligent electronic braking makes it a capable option for anglers fishing larger swimbaits, topwater plugs, jigs, and heavier artificial presentations.
Available in 200 right-hand and 201 left-hand retrieve configurations, with HG and XG gear ratio options.
Shimano I-DC4 Digital Control Braking
The Curado DC 200/201 features Shimano's I-DC4 Digital Control braking system, which electronically monitors spool rotation and adjusts braking throughout the cast.
This technology helps reduce backlashes while maintaining casting distance and control, particularly when fishing heavier artificial lures or casting in changing wind conditions.
Four externally selectable braking settings allow anglers to adapt to different line types, lure weights, and casting situations without opening the reel.
Larger 200-Size Spool — More Line Capacity
The defining advantage of the Curado DC 200/201 is its larger spool.
Compared with the original Curado DC 150, the 200-size platform provides up to 40% greater line capacity, offering additional flexibility when using heavier braided line, thicker fluorocarbon, or larger artificial lures.
This makes the Curado DC 200/201 particularly appealing for:
-
Larger swimbaits and topwater plugs
-
Heavier braided line and fluorocarbon
-
Frog fishing and heavy-cover bass fishing
-
Longer casts with larger artificial lures
-
Applications where additional line capacity is beneficial
For anglers who prefer a low-profile baitcasting reel but need more spool capacity than a traditional 150-size platform, the Curado DC 200 is an excellent option.

Freshwater Applications
-
Swimbaits: Larger artificial lures and heavier line.
-
Frogs: Fast line recovery and added capacity for heavy braid.
-
Spinnerbaits & Chatterbaits: Smooth retrieves and controlled casting.
-
Topwater Plugs: Consistent casting performance with larger surface lures.

Jigs & Texas Rigs: Dependable line pickup when fishing around structure.
Light Inshore Applications
For occasional coastal artificial-lure fishing, the Curado DC 200/201 may also be considered for:
-
Redfish: Paddle tails, soft plastics, and topwater plugs.
-
Speckled Trout: Twitch baits and larger artificial presentations.
-
Snook: Swimbaits and topwater plugs in lighter-cover situations.
Saltwater care: The Curado DC 200/201 is not a dedicated sealed saltwater reel. Saltwater exposure increases corrosion risk, particularly around bearings and internal components. Avoid submersion, follow Shimano's maintenance recommendations after exposure, and choose a purpose-built saltwater reel for frequent coastal fishing.
Shimano Curado DC HG vs. XG — Which Should You Choose?
HG — 7.4:1 Gear Ratio
The Curado DC 200HG and 201HG offer a versatile retrieve speed suited to swimbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, topwater plugs, and general-purpose casting.
Premier Tackle recommendation: Choose the HG for the most versatile Curado DC 200 setup.
XG — 8.5:1 Gear Ratio
The Curado DC 200XG and 201XG provide faster line pickup for frog fishing, flipping, pitching, jigs, and techniques requiring rapid slack-line recovery.
Premier Tackle recommendation: Choose the XG when fast line management is a priority.
Right-Hand vs. Left-Hand Retrieve
-
200: Right-hand retrieve
-
201: Left-hand retrieve
Select your preferred retrieve direction and gear ratio from the available options.
Pair Your Curado DC 200/201 With the Right Rod & Line
The Curado DC 200/201 pairs particularly well with medium-heavy and heavy-power casting rods, depending on the lure weights and fishing techniques.
For larger swimbaits, frogs, and heavier artificial lures, choose a rod with the appropriate power, action, and lure rating.
Braided line, fluorocarbon, and monofilament can all be suitable depending on the application.
