Fulling Mill Adams Bastard Crab — Dark, Bottom, Size 4

The Fulling Mill Adams Bastard Crab is a crab imitation designed for saltwater anglers targeting fish that feed on crustaceans along the bottom. With its realistic profile and bottom-oriented presentation, this pattern is an excellent option for sight-fishing situations where fish are searching for crabs across shallow flats, sandy bottoms, and areas of mixed sand and grass.

Crabs are an important food source for many saltwater gamefish. Species such as permit, redfish, bonefish, and other crustacean-feeding predators regularly search the bottom for small crabs and other forage. A well-presented crab fly can be particularly effective when fish are feeding selectively and a baitfish imitation isn't producing.

The Dark colorway provides a contrasting silhouette against lighter bottom types, helping the fly remain visible to fish under suitable lighting and water conditions. Its bottom-oriented design makes it a useful option when you want your presentation to stay close to the feeding zone rather than moving high in the water column.

Fulling Mill is known for producing purpose-built fly patterns for demanding fishing situations. The Adams Bastard Crab is a useful addition to a saltwater fly box, particularly for anglers who regularly encounter fish feeding on crabs across shallow coastal habitat.

Ideal Applications

The Adams Bastard Crab is suited to shallow saltwater environments where crabs form part of the local forage. It can be fished across sandy flats, grass edges, potholes, and other areas where gamefish search for crustaceans.

For sight-fishing, accuracy and presentation are critical. Lead the fish appropriately, allow the fly to settle, and use subtle movements to imitate a crab moving along or across the bottom. The best retrieve depends on the fish's behavior, water depth, current, and bottom composition.

• Saltwater sight-fishing

Premier Tackle Insight

When fishing Florida's Gulf Coast, it's important to match your fly to what the fish are actually eating. Although baitfish patterns are useful in many situations, redfish and other predators often spend considerable time searching the bottom for crabs and shrimp.

A crab imitation gives you a different presentation when fish are ignoring baitfish patterns or feeding close to the bottom. Around Tampa Bay, Sarasota, and the surrounding flats, pay attention to the bottom composition, available forage, and the fish's behavior before choosing your fly.

The Dark Adams Bastard Crab is worth carrying when you need a crab profile that stands out against lighter bottom conditions. Present it naturally, avoid unnecessary movement, and allow the fish time to find the fly.

Why Choose a Crab Imitation?

Crab patterns imitate a major food source for many saltwater species. Unlike a fleeing baitfish, a crab often moves close to the bottom, making a slower and more deliberate presentation appropriate in many situations.

A dedicated crab fly can be especially valuable when targeting permit, which are well known for feeding on crustaceans, as well as redfish searching for prey across shallow flats. Choosing the correct fly size, color, and sink behavior helps create a more convincing presentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What species can I catch with the Adams Bastard Crab?

It is primarily suited to saltwater species that feed on crabs, including permit, redfish, and bonefish. Local forage and conditions will influence its effectiveness.

When should I use a dark crab pattern?

Dark patterns can provide a distinct silhouette over lighter sand or in certain lighting conditions. The best color depends on water clarity, bottom color, light, and the fish's feeding behavior.

How should I fish this fly?

Present it near the bottom and use subtle movements when appropriate. Avoid pulling it too aggressively if fish are feeding cautiously. Adjust the retrieve to the species and conditions.

What does Size 4 mean?

Size 4 identifies the hook size used for the pattern. Hook dimensions vary by design and manufacturer, so it should not be treated as an exact measurement of the finished fly.
